Understanding Recovery: A Research Based Perspective with Dr. Alex Elswick, Ph.D.

Alex Elswick, a leading voice in substance use prevention and recovery. With a powerful blend of academic expertise, personal passion, and community-driven advocacy, Dr. Elswick brings the latest research and real-world insight to help us better understand the path to long-term recovery. Dr. Elswick holds a B.A. in History and Political Science from Centre College (2015), and both an M.S. and Ph.D. in Family Sciences from the University of Kentucky, where he specialized in Couple and Family Therapy. Since joining the UK Department of Family Sciences in 2020 as an Assistant Extension Professor, he has focused on equipping communities with tools to build recovery capital—a strengths-based framework for supporting those in recovery. Beyond academia, Dr. Elswick is the co-founder of Voices of Hope, a Lexington-based nonprofit dedicated to supporting people in recovery through education, advocacy, and peer support. His work challenges stigma, empowers families, and promotes evidence-based practices that foster healing and hope. This presentation offers a chance to explore recovery through a compassionate, research-informed lens—with practical takeaways for professionals, families, and anyone committed to making recovery possible in every community.

The Many Pathways of Recovery

Join Dr. Alex Elswick, leading researcher and advocate in the field of substance use recovery. His work focuses on recovery capital - an assets-based framework helping individuals and communities support long-term recovery.

Drawing on both his academic research and lived experience, Dr. Elswick will share the latest science on long-term recovery strategies for reducing stigma and enhancing support for treatment teams, courts, and community programs.
